Brave Questions for the Brave Man


How would you rate yourself as a father today, on a 1 to 10 scale (with 1 as the best)? Would your wife and kids agree with that rating? Do you have the courage to ask them?

What would you say are your greatest opportunities for improvement as a dad? What would your wife and kids say?

Do you have fun with your wife and kids (both together and separately) on a regular basis? How would your wife and kids answer that question?

What could you do to further enhance the joy in your family?

What kind of changes do you need to make in your work schedule and priorities to free up more family fun time?

Do you agree that dads need to play more than just a financial support role in the family? Why or why not? How would you say you are doing in each of the four dynamic support areas (emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual) with your family?

Among the four areas, where are your biggest strengths? What are your biggest opportunities for improvement?

Do you agree that a True Moral Compass is one of the most important legacies you, as a dad, could give your children? Why or why not? What would you need to do to improve the accuracy of your own Moral Compass?

Are you and your wife usually united on the discipline front? Is your “yes” yes and your “no” no? In other words, do you set a firm line of right and wrong and stick to it? Or do you (or she) usually give in after the kids whine or complain enough?

What kind of relationship do you have with the mother of your children? What can you do to improve it? How important would your efforts be to your children?

Think of your closest friends and pick three words for each guy that best describes him—the first words that come to mind are usually pretty accurate. What does the list look like? Strong? Mixed? Pretty sketchy? Be honest with yourself.

Have you ever shared your deepest fears, worries or struggles with any of these men? If so, did they help you face them and master them . . . or not?

Deep down, do you think you need to develop some new friendships with men of competence, character and commitment? Why or why not? If so, how do you plan to make that happen?
